What do you do when your child is desperate for a pet, but the family home is a minefield of allergies?

In this episode, Sirkka takes us back to a childhood home governed by the relentless logic of Finnish duty and the crushing limitations of allergies. After the family’s hamster had to be rehomed due to an allergy crisis, the search for a hypoallergenic replacement turned into a high-stakes process of elimination. After ruling out tortoises (due to dusty peat) and snakes (a bit too “repulsive” for mother’s liking), they finally welcomed a leopard gecko. Sirkka pragmatically named him Aurinko (“Sun”) due to his bright yellow colour—a creature of light, cared for by a family who lived in a state of permanent, low-level terror.

The irony of the story lies in the family’s impeccable sense of responsibility. Despite their collective phobia, they didn’t just “keep” a gecko; they provided him with a truly top-notch, five-star “Lizard Spa” experience. Sirkka describes the absolute dedication to his welfare: from meticulously monitoring UV rays and D3-vitamin absorption to maintaining a perfect “wetbox” for flawless skin-shedding. This gecko lived the absolute dream, receiving world-class care from people who were simultaneously too terrified to actually touch him.

The real charm of the story is the contrast between this elite-level care and the family’s very open struggle to keep as much distance from their scaly tenant as possible. Sirkka recounts the “military-style operations” required to feed live insects into the tank—a high-speed choreography of dropping crickets while desperately trying to avoid any physical contact with the insects or the gecko’s skin. For Sirkka, the fear was real; she admits she is still terrified of crickets to this day.

The episode takes a more reflective turn as Sirkka discusses the gecko’s eventual passing and the difficult questions of how to say goodbye. When the ground is frozen solid or you live in a block of flats, the traditional “garden burial” isn’t always an option. Sirkka shares her honest adult thoughts on the morality of pet disposal and reflects on the bizarre cultural idea that every child must have a pet—even if that pet is a source of genuine phobia for the entire household. It is a story about the contradictory charm of an exotic pet: a tiny life cared for with utmost devotion, even if it is best admired from a very safe distance—as was certainly the case with Sirkka’s family.

The package includes an audio recording, a full transcript, a Finnish–English vocabulary list, vocabulary explanations, multiple-choice questions, and a complete answer key. This Finnish listening exercise lasts 20 minutes and 10 seconds and features a monologue using typical Eastern Finnish (specifically Southeastern Finland / South Karelian) speech patterns. This episode is best suited for upper-intermediate to advanced Finnish learners at B2–C1 level. B2 learners will find this a fascinating exercise in navigating a continuous narrative; they can follow the logical flow of the “pet auditions” and the hilarious details of the “Lizard Spa” but will benefit from the transcript to catch regional phonetic variations and specific reptile-related terminology. C1 learners can use this to master the art of recognising irony and psychological depth in spoken Finnish, particularly how Sirkka balances humour with honest reflection on ethics and phobias. All in all, learners at both levels will benefit from the extensive specialised vocabulary, ranging from the technical requirements of terrarium maintenance and reptile health to the idiomatic expressions used to describe visceral phobias, internal conflicts, and complex ethical reflections.
