Description

Nothing tests a neighbourly relationship quite like a heavy Finnish snowfall and a shared driveway. In this episode, Satu returns from Thailand only to find her neighbour, Suvi, standing in the snow with a shovel and a point to prove. The transition from the +32°C heat of Bangkok to a freezing Finnish weather is a shock; Satu recounts how she spent the trip “lathering on SPF 50 like a vampire” after turning bright red on her first day. But as the small talk fades, the two women enter into a masterclass of suburban negotiation over who—if anyone—is actually going to clear the snow.

As they discuss the work rotation, it becomes clear that Suvi is the only person left standing. The rest of the neighbours are out of commission: the elderly Pirjo and Matti are deemed too old to help, and both women seem to be pinning their hopes on Henkka, who is currently sidelined with a serious case of pneumonia. While Suvi suggests hiring an outside contractor to end the misery, Satu is firm about avoiding the extra cost—despite having no intention of picking up the shovel herself.

Instead, Satu relies on a lingering case of sciatica and a busy work schedule to set her boundaries. By the end of the chat, the two have reached a fragile agreement: Satu will handle the “light” tasks, like filling the sand bucket and brushing the stairs, while Suvi continues with the back-breaking work of clearing the main road ”until Henkka recovers.” The exchange ends with Satu heading inside to test out a passion fruit coconut chicken recipe she learned in Thailand, leaving Suvi alone in the cold with the shovel.

In this package, you’ll get the audio, a complete transcript, a Finnish-English vocabulary list, multiple-choice comprehension questions, and a full answer key, making it easy to listen, follow along, and check your understanding independently. This Finnish listening exercise lasts approximately 10 minutes and features a dialogue between two speakers – Satu and Suvi – using typical Southern Finnish (Helsinki region & surroundings) speech patterns. Best suited for intermediate Finnish learners at B1 level. For B1 learners, this exercise provides a rewarding “stretch.” While the speed is natural, the logical flow of the negotiation makes it easy to follow. You will practice following a compromise being made in real-time and pick up essential vocabulary related to winter maintenance, health (such as pneumonia and sciatica), and travel.
