Description
How do you handle a doctor’s appointment when you are already convinced you know the diagnosis?
In this online consultation, Satu checks in with Dr Suvi after a few days of feeling “heavy,” dizzy, and constantly sweating. Between working in a stifling +30°C office and attending outdoor festivals with her colleagues, Satu is certain she is suffering from sunstroke—and she isn’t about to let a medical degree get in the way of her own recovery plan.
The conversation offers a genuine look at the tug-of-war between professional expertise and a headstrong patient. You will hear Satu attempt to steer the diagnosis herself, wondering if her fatigue is down to old issues with her haemoglobin or perhaps the lack of air conditioning at work, while the doctor patiently works to rule out more serious symptoms. The dialogue takes a turn for the absurd when the advice on recovery hits a wall; while Satu is happy to accept a “prescription” for chicken soup, she draws a hard line at the doctor’s suggestion of adding rice or pasta, insisting instead on a specific version with “vegetable strips.”
As the doctor prescribes the most difficult cure of all—complete rest—Satu’s true character emerges. She is a patient who bargains, clearly put off by the idea of being confined to her bed for two days. In a country where “proper summer” famously lasts for only a few days, getting official sick leave to escape the heat is a rare irony—yet Satu pushes back, claiming that staying still sounds “terrible” and asking if she could at least do some “light gymnastics” instead. It is a humorous and authentic look at a modern Finnish medical encounter, capturing that specific moment where professional healthcare advice is put to the test by a headstrong patient.
The package includes a full transcript, a Finnish–English vocabulary list, multiple-choice comprehension questions, and a complete answer key, so you can listen, follow along, and test your understanding. This Finnish listening exercise lasts 7 minutes and 24 seconds and features a dialogue between two speakers – Satu and the doctor – using typical Southern Finnish speech patterns. Best suitable for intermediate Finnish learners at B1 level (with support from a transcription and glossary for more difficult parts) and for B2 levels who want to practise following fast-paced, defensive speech and recognising how a patient subtly challenges professional authority while sticking to their own “home-remedy” logic.
